GARDEN EQUIPMENT I find that the correct equipment makes
limited time in the garden ever so much
more efficient and comfortable!
Here are some of my all time best tips:
Gloves. I find them
essential! Most of the year, I wear a double layer. First, plain cotton brown
jersey garden gloves (no rubber dots or any reinforcements) (less than $2 a
pair, usually). On top of these go a pair of yellow kitchen rubber gloves (also
the cheapest I can find, in quantity). I find this combination WARM, DRY, and
CHEAP. The cotton gloves absorb the sweat, so my hands stay dry and warm, while
the rubber gloves keep me clean and dry. I can pick up anything, from slimy
rotten pumpkins to slugs AND my hands and nails don't get that tell-tale
ground-in dirt. Usually, I separate the two when I take them off, and leave the
cotton gloves on top of the water heater (where it's warm) to dry before the next outing. I can wash
those easily, and when the rubber gloves get too many holes, I just
throw that part away. They last for a surprisingly long time. I keep
several pair of each, along with a bottle of foot powder, on my water heater. A
sprinkle of the powder into the rubber glove helps me pull it easily over the
cotton glove and I'm ready for anything!
Weeding
Tools. These two instruments take care of the
majority of weeds in the garden. I always carry the screw driver in my garden
tool belt to have handy whenever I see dandelions, wild onions, clover or
anything where I have to dig the root out. The Winged Weeder, with its long
handle, can be glided through any empty soil, disrupting the little annual weeds
without any bending or squatting on the part of the gardener. Very slick, very
efficient. Turns the cultivated soil into a lovely blank frame for your emerging
perennials and shrubs.

Knee Pads. Makes it much
easier to get down and dirty in the borders! Keeps your knees dry and protected.
Hot fashion statement, too!
